Bast - The Cat Goddess

Bast (or Bastet) is an ancient Alishan Goddess who appears as either a woman with the head of a domestic or wild cat, or in animal form as a wide variety of feline breeds.
Bast followers treat the cat as a revered animal, often pampering to the whims of the felines and treating them better than they would treat their own family.
The Goddess herself is perceived by other religions as untrustworthy, as she is self-obsessed and focused upon her own gratification. She governs the realm of 'pleasure' in the ancient Alishan pantheon, which extends to all forms of pleasure making. However, unlike other gods who govern similar realms, Basts pleasure making is purely selfish and not directed at others. For example, Saint Marcus believes in pleasuring an entire community through gifts, food and festivals.... whereas Bast would expect all the food and gifts to be brought to her and her alone. It should be noted that Basts followers can be Clerics or Druids (or both). She also has a few arcane worshippers who are always accompanied by a Panther. These arcane users will always regard the Panther as their 'charge' whom they are to be guardian to, and will never deem the panther as their companion.

Bastets clerics (and druids) hold daily festivals where the cats are centre of attention. Gifts and Cream are placed at the foot of Basts statue, and none are permitted to remove them except for the cats. (Obviously if the cream goes sour, it is replaced)
If a cleric makes eye contact with a cat, they most avert their gaze and ask for forgiveness.

Of all Basts relationships, her strange companionship with Set is of most interest. She is seen to accompany Set as if she were a wife, but she refuses to marry him. In fact, many perceptions have seen Set to be Basts lover and recognise that Basts interest in him is purely for her own needs.
Though not an evil goddess, she truly has her own goals and the cunning to achieve them. If cornered, both Bastet and her clergy can become ferocious fighters and are deemed extremely dangerous. This cat has claws!!

Domains - Animal, Earth, Good, Evil, Trickery, War
Allies - Set (when it suits her).
Enemies - None.

Dionysos/Bacchus

Domains: Plants, Travel

Bacchus or Dionysos are two identities of the same god. Mostly seen as a god of drunken party-animals he in fact started out as a fertility god. He just has a nick for good whine and doesn’t mind a good party.
He is displayed either as a young man with blushed cheeks and a cup in his hand, encircled with a vine of ivy. This is the image most often seen as it is most appealing to his female followers, and it fits best within the idea of a carefree god of parties and spirits. His other appearance is that of a goat or a bull. This has led to the ritual where during parties in his honour raw bull meat is torn off of a carcass of a bull and eaten raw. Often this occurs only after a few hours and a whole load of drinks.

Bacchus his followers enjoy parties and wine, but some also focus more on the growing aspect of him. They either tend to the grape plants to make wine or grain fields for beer. They can at times also be quite capable healers who help men and women who have problems with their fertility.

Bacchus has few enemies and few real friends. One cannot rely on him much, but no one hates a good party, and everyone is generally free to attend. Some of the other gods find his parties ‘below their standards’ and therefore stay away from him.

Finnavar: Also known as the “king of the fairies” (fey)

Finnavar is the god of pleasure and enjoyment, who also has a great liking for gold. He is sometimes referred to as the lord of the dead, for he ‘collects’ the fallen brownies and fairies and turns them into gold. This is to stop their souls from roaming about freely across the world and causing havoc. His wife, Diaone Sidhe, comes just after him to save the souls from this imprisonment and send them to the afterlife.
He is mischievous by nature and not one that you should simply trust when you encounter him. Finnavar likes to play jokes on people, as do his followers. Those who actually gain their trust though will have valuable and trustworthy allies, as long as you do not offend them.
Also Finnavar is known for his love for women, and though married to Daoine Sidhe; he often still chases the brownies and even mortals for the sheer fun of it. Some followers of Daoine consider him to be the sign of infidelity, while others (often Finnavar’s own followers) see it as nothing more then a little fun and definitely good exercise. Because those long legged mortals sure can run!

Appearance: Finnavar is pictured as a round-bellied man; due to all the delicious food his wife makes for him, with a small grey beard. He looks a bit like a dwarf, yet his clothing immediately shows the difference. He is fond of bright colours and especially of golden. His symbol is a chest full of gold (sometimes with a few women dancing around it).

Pan, God of Nature and Wild Passion

Pan is a god of fertility, unbridled wild passion and desire but is also regarded as god of shepherds and flocks.

Symbol: A reed pipe (pipes of Pan) or a crown of pine needles.

Domains: Animal, Earth, Trickery, Water.

Portfolio: Fauns, fertility, flocks, mountain streams, music, nymphs, satyrs, shepherds and shepherdess.

The parentage of Pan is unclear though in some myths he is the son of Zeus this is not universally accepted, however, all though in all accounts his mother is said to have been a nymph.

He is depicted as a satyr with a reed pipe, a shepherd's crook and a branch of pine or crown of pine needles. His wrinkled face has a very prominent chin and upon his forehead are two horns; his body is hairy and Pan walks upon cloven hooves. Pan is a swift runner and climbs rocks with ease and may, at times, be found feasting in the retinue of Dionysus.

Beliefs:

Pan has no truly organised religion and his clerics roam freely among the wilds subtly aiding those that require it and beguiling those that would bring harm to the lands.

His clergy and followers are happy involve themselves in any feasting or festival they may happen across upon their way and indulge in such with a passion.

Poseidon

Domains: Water, Destruction

The god of the seas, earthquakes and streams. Poseidon rules over all water, and so his clergy generally have an affection with water, whether from oceans, rivers or even small streams. A powerful cleric of Poseidon will use it to the extend of its destructive force.
The seas however are whimsical things, at times as quiet and soothing as a small puddle, yet at other times destructive and cruel as a storm. The same goes for Poseidon, he can be a quiet comforting deity towards his followers, giving them save travels across oceans and rivers. Yet he can be a terrible god towards those who he deems enemies. Trapping them in the most terrible storms, or if on land he uses earthquakes and tsunamis against them.
His enemies can be any who he deems unworthy to sail on his seas, who serve the wrong god (not him) or who did not respect him enough last time. He especially strives with the followers of Aphrodite as she has had her flings with Zeus while he wanted her for himself. Also the followers of Talos don’t fall kindly with him, as often the storms of Talos interfere with the waves of Poseidon.
His most important ally is his son Triton who rules over the inland seas, also he has good relationships with Hera as they both hold some grudges against Zeus due to his escapades. He doesn’t act against Zeus directly though, fearing his wrath.

Often the clerics of Poseidon offer tributes in the form of rings to the sea while they travel or before they leave, to ensure they travel safely and to display their eternal bond with their deity.
The priests perform rituals where small land creatures are tossed into the sea to display the power of the sea over the land and please their god. They dress in blue tints, any from bright blue of the clear waters to the dark blue-black of a raging storm.

PostPosted: Sun Oct 15, 2006 7:19 am    Post subject: Triton Reply with quote

Triton, sea-god son of Poseidon

Triton is the fish-tailed sea god, the son and herald of Poseidon, king of the seas.

Symbol: A conch-shell.

Domains: Knowledge, Travel, Water.

As Poseidon's herald he bears a conch-shell trumpet with which he is able to summon the creatures of the deep or still the waves with its clarion call.

Triton dwells with his father in a golden palace at the bottom of the sea and is also considered the lord of all inland seas.

Beliefs:

Triton most often accompanies Poseidon, or acts in his stead; as such Triton has few clergy in his own right and is served and venerated, alongside his father, by the clerics of Poseidon.
